[Abecedary of Reflection] Walking

W: Walking

I do some of my best reflecting while walking. Walking is not only exercise for the body, but for the mind and soul as well. Anyone who knows me knows that I talk a mile a minute. I walk just as fast, just trying to keep up with the million thoughts running through my mind at the same time. But every once in a while, a contemplative walk helps clear my mind and provides the closest thing to meditation I have found.

Sometimes you have to stop and smell the roses, or catch the snow flakes and hail that surprise you on a spring hike!

While walking it is important to look ahead at the terrain you will encounter, to look back at the ground you’ve covered, and to look inward, for reflection.

Bridge Dancing When I’m on a hike, dancing across bridges is mandatory!

I will continue to walk, to reflect, and to attempt to teach myself meditation. What will you do for yourself?

  1. Walking is a great idea for reflection and something I should definitely participate in. Haha! At this time, my car ride home from work, provides me a time to reflect on my day and think about what needs to be done at work and at home. Sometimes, I just turn off my phone and radio and sort out my thoughts on the drive home. It is not as peaceful as a walk but it gets the job done!

    I use running to think and reflect about my goals, tasks and personal challenges. After running I feel rejuvenated to move forward with whatever comes my way.

    Like Lisa, I too turn to running. During my long runs I take time to reflect on the day, week, and think about what’s ahead. I often will laugh aloud when I remember something funny that happened ( I get funny looks from other runners when I do). I cherish this peaceful alone time and feel so much better after I finish.
